A window is referred to as a sash window if it has one or more movable panels, which are called sashes. The way you can tell whether a window is a sash window is if it has a frame holding together several panes of glass. Quite often narrow muntins separate the panes.
A few kinds of sash windows exist. Sometimes the panels of glass slide up and down or side-to-side. Other sash windows have panels that open outward. The sliding sash windows sometimes are referred to as sliding sash, case, sash or Yorkshire light windows.
The traditional sash windows found most commonly in the US and UK are made of two sashes that are positioned in a frame with one over the other. This type of window is opened and closed by sliding up and down. This kind of window has the advantage of you being able to remove or tilt the sashes whenever they need to be cleaned. There are many different configurations, models and shapes to choose from within this class of sash window.
Sash windows were first used in England during the 1670s. The famous Ham House located on the River Thames just outside of London is an early architectural example of a building featuring sash windows. Robert Hooke is credited with creating the sash window, although there isn’t any conclusive evidence that proves this.
Victorian and Georgian style homes usually feature sash windows. The classic type of sash windows has three panes placed horizontally and two placed vertically, resulting in a six-over-six paneled window. The standard size of sash windows is four feet wide; however, wooden sash can fit almost any size and there is no fixed rule.
In order for sash windows to function, there is panel that is balanced through using a counter-weight made of heavy steel or another material hidden within the window frame.
Usually sash windows are made out of single glazed glass and soft wood, although sometimes double glazed glass is used.
Due to the fact that a sliding motion is required in order to open and close sash windows, they can be more vulnerable to problems than other windows. They require a lot of maintenance as well; however, the extra work involved is worth it since sash windows are very attractive.
In addition to being very attractive, there is another significant advantage that sash windows offer compared to regular windows- they’re more efficient when it comes to cooling a home’s interior when the weather is warm. The reason for this is that sash windows open at the bottom and top. The room’s warm air is allowed to escape through the top opening, while cool air coming from outdoors is allowed in through the bottom opening.
A new kind of sash window was released recently into the marketplace. They are called uPVC sash windows, and they are attractive like regular sash windows are but are much more energy efficient and don’t require as much as maintenance and painting on a regular basis.
Like anything else, don’t choose the first windows company that you happen to find. Make sure to get work samples and quotes from thee different companies at least before you make your final decision on which company you want to have install your new windows.

Adding Value to a Home with Improvement Projects
Whether you’re planning on moving soon or would like to remain in your home for many years, it’s a good idea to increase its overall value. It isn’t just about resell value after all. Adding value also gives you alternative refinancing options and more collateral. A house, no matter the size, is a big and important investment. It’s vital that owners always view them this way and treat them accordingly!
The best way to increase a home’s value is through renovations. However, not every home improvement project works to increase the value of a home, so it is important to consider which projects are right for your home before undertaking them.
Below are projects that have withstood time for owners who would like to have a higher value for your there, regardless of their location.
Do you want the value of your home to go up overnight? All you have to do is add a bathroom or bedroom. It is only logical that a house with more bedrooms or bathrooms is more valuable than a house with fewer bedrooms or bathrooms. Homes with more rooms accommodate more people, and offer more space, so they are naturally worth more.
One way to add more rooms is by putting on an extension. If there is no space on the property for this, you can split up a larger room into two small ones. Another option would be to turn a larger room into two small rooms.
Upgrade Your Kitchen and Bathrooms
Most potential buyers will consider a bathroom or a kitchen to be a real deal breaker. Most buyers will want to have open kitchens with incredible counter tops, roomy cabinets and top of the line stainless steel appliances. These kitchen updates can be costly, but they’re more than worth it if you want to catch the eye of buyers.
Bathrooms are also a tricky spot. Modern buyers are on the look out for claw-foot tubs, jetted hot tubs, dual sinks and lots of storage space. A properly furnished bathroom can also make its owner happier. When it comes down to it, the bathroom is the one place inside your home where you can enjoy the quiet and just relax.
Making Plumbing And Heating Adjustments
It may not be glamorous and there may not be much to show off to friends, but it’s worth it. The major systems of your home must be in working order and up to local codes for your safety and comfort. This is even more true when it comes to older homes that have copper pipes, or homes that rely on gas heating. For homes that still have illegal copper pipes, your municipality may offer funding to pay for replacements.
There are other, less elaborate projects to take on, such as roof repairs, replacing windows, cleaning and replacing gutters, and taking extra care of the lawn. Even though all home improvement ideas will help to increase the resale value of a home, the three suggestions above will give the biggest return on your money. Adding rooms, renovating the kitchen or bathrooms, or updating the utilities will add value and enjoyment in a home for years to come.
Great value can be brought by working to make a home more appealing and up-to-date!
