If you aren’t familiar with what sash windows are, they are a kind of window made up of movable sashes or panels. If there is a frame that holds a few panes of glass together, it is a sash window. Quite often narrow muntins separate the panes.
There are several different kinds of sash window. Some sash windows have panels that open to the outside; others have panels that slide to open – either horizontally or vertically. The sliding sash windows sometimes are referred to as sliding sash, case, sash or Yorkshire light windows.
The American-style sash window is a traditional variation that has two sashes, one of which rests on top of the other within a frame. This type of window is opened and closed by sliding up and down. One of the benefits of this window is the ability to remove or tilt the sashes in order to clean them. There are many different configurations, models and shapes to choose from within this class of sash window.
Sash windows were first put up in England in the late 17th century. “Ham House” is a famous example of a property with sash windows. Robert Hooke is credited with creating the sash window, although there isn’t any conclusive evidence that proves this.
Victorian- and Georgian-style homes often have sash windows. The classic type of sash windows has three panes placed horizontally and two placed vertically, resulting in a six-over-six paneled window. The standard size of sash windows is four feet wide; however, wooden sash can fit almost any size and there is no fixed rule.
In order for sash windows to function, there is panel that is balanced through using a counter-weight made of heavy steel or another material hidden within the window frame.
Usually sash windows are made out of single glazed glass and soft wood, although sometimes double glazed glass is used.
Due to the fact that sash windows need to be able to slide to close and open, they are prone to more problems than other kinds of windows. They require a lot of maintenance as well; however, the extra work involved is worth it since sash windows are very attractive.
Other than beautifying a home, sash windows offer some benefits that ordinary windows do not. They are more energy efficient, and they help to keep a home cool when the weather is warm outside. This is due to the fact that sash windows open at both the bottom and top. The room’s warm air is allowed to escape through the top opening, while cool air coming from outdoors is allowed in through the bottom opening.
A new kind of sash window was released recently into the marketplace. They are called uPVC sash windows, and they are attractive like regular sash windows are but are much more energy efficient and don’t require as much as maintenance and painting on a regular basis.
When you decide to give sash windows a try, be careful not to go with the first window installer you find. Make sure to get work samples and quotes from thee different companies at least before you make your final decision on which company you want to have install your new windows.

Home Improvement Ideas You Should Use To Add Value To Your Home
Regardless of how long you plan to stay in your home, it is important to find ways to increase its value. After all, this is not all about selling the home to someone else. Homes with higher value have more refinancing options and they make better collateral. Our most important investment is our home, and that’s what we’ve always been taught from when we were much younger. Increasing your home’s value only strengthens that investment.
The best way to improve the value of a home is through home improvement and renovation projects. However, you will need to know which projects will improve the appearance and value of the home the most.
Here are projects that have passed the test of time and that are sure to add to your home’s value no matter where you live.
Add On A Room
Do you want to witness the value of your property increase overnight? Put on another bedroom or bathroom. If two houses were exactly identical, but one house had an additional bathroom, then that home would be worth much more. Obviously, larger homes, built for more people, are worth more.
You can simply add extensions to create more rooms. Alternatively you could convert a larger room into 2 smaller rooms if there is no room for an extension. Another option would be to turn a larger room into two small rooms.
Remodel the Kitchen or Bathroom
The two most important rooms in any home are the kitchen and bathroom. Most buyers will want to have open kitchens with incredible counter tops, roomy cabinets and top of the line stainless steel appliances. Of course, a kitchen makeover is an expensive project, but it makes a home much more valuable and appealing to buyers.
Renovated bathrooms are also a major attraction. Modernizing your bathroom with claw-foot rubs, exquisite sinks and jetted tubs will notably help improve the value of your house. Apart from making your home more appealing to potential buyers a beautiful bathroom will increase your own happiness. A brand new bathroom is sure to improve the quality of living in the home right now.
Update the Heating and Plumbing
Making heating and plumbing adjustments is not as fun as renovating a bathroom. Even so, this will help you prevent problems and add value to your house. This is even more true when it comes to older homes that have copper pipes, or homes that rely on gas heating. For homes that still have illegal copper pipes, your municipality may offer funding to pay for replacements.
There are also smaller projects that still add value; these include getting new windows and doors, replacing the roof or gutters, or having the lawn landscaped. Most home improvement projects will increase your home’s value; however, the three above suggestions will provide the greatest value for your money. Adding rooms, renovating the kitchen or bathrooms, or updating the utilities will add value and enjoyment in a home for years to come.
Great value can be brought by working to make a home more appealing and up-to-date!
